Lurene "Beanie" Rabern Obituary

Funeral services for Lurene Rabern were held Tue., July 31, 2018, at the Congregational Church in Lusk.  She passed away Thur., July 26, 2018, at her home in Lusk.

Lurene Angela (Hunt) Rabern was born July 9th, 1931 in Philip, S.D. to Ennis “Jack” and Jennie (Annis) Hunt.  Lurene’s childhood was spent on the family ranch south of Eagle Butte, S.D. where she spent a lot of time horseback with her brother Geno.  One childhood experience she shared was her and Geno trailing 80 horses to Eagle Butte to put on the train.  She always told “we never gained one or never lost one”.  She spent hours helping her dad in the garden and her mom in the kitchen.

On November 23rd, 1949 Lurene married Tim Rabern.  To this marriage 7 children were born.

Lurene was a hard worker, raising her children and two granddaughters.  She worked on her parents’ ranch, cooked at the Edgemont School, was a cook in several hospitals, and worked as a waitress in different restaurants.  The job she enjoyed the most was working at Central Wyoming College in the equine department.  While working there she helped keep the rodeo grounds and classrooms painted and clean.  She was also well known for keeping the cowboys fed with her cinnamon rolls and keeping them looking sharp with ironed shirts and vests.  Her love for rodeo was the reason she enjoyed her job.  Lurene provided a scholarship to the saddle bronc rider at CWC, which she took great pride in.  She was known for her potato salad, cinnamon rolls, and her rum cake.  One craft she enjoyed was embroidering and making things for her friends and family.  Lurene enjoyed a shot of Black Velvet on the rocks or in her coffee, and the great-grandkids thought it was Grandma Beanie’s juice to make her better.

Lurene’s last years were spent in Lusk enjoying sitting on the deck feeding the birds and squirrels.  She decided to go into the chicken business with her great-grandkids.  She enjoyed going and gathering the eggs and putting the chickens to bed.  She was so proud of the eggs they got.

Lurene is survived by her children: Diane Whitt of Lusk, Kathryn (Ken) Keenan of Lusk, Dick (Cissy) Engleburt of Newcastle, Joan Rudabeck (Tim Murphy) of Collinsville, IL, Riane (Pat) Woodman of Cody, Pete (Chris) Brentley of Cody; her sisters:  Joan Webb, Joni (Dave) Nelson, Betsy Ducheneaux, Big Sue Eberhard, and Little Sue Campbell all of Eagle Butte, SD, Sharon (Daune) Hamum of Pierre, Shirley (David) Adikans of Cheyenne, and Midge Tiokasin of Arizona; brothers:  Geno and Everte (Milinda) of Eagle Butte; grandkids:  Clinton (Treasa) Lancaster; Ab (Heather) Whitt, Kenny Jensen, Jackie (Paul) Bauder, Rita (David) Woorley, Riley (Chip) Janzen, Angela Rudabeck, Jerica (Steve) Jackson, Shanna, Heather; and great-grandkids:  Tyler and Payton Whitt; Emma Sigvartson, Korbin and Wyatt Jensen, Tra and Kendra Bauder, and Karson, Porter, Cambra and Sutton Woorley.

Lurene is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Rita Porterfield, granddaughters Lynette Forget and Stacie Rabern, son-in-law Slim Whitt, and brothers-in-law Honey Webb and Collin Campbell.

Memorials can be sent to the family to help continue the Lurene Rabern CWC Saddle Bronc Scholarship.
