Obituary

Harry Thomas "Tom" Goodwin

May 22, 1952 – October 27, 2026

Harry Thomas "Tom" Goodwin, 74, of Lance Creek, Wyoming, formerly of Lavina, Montana, passed away on October 27, 2026.

Tom was born on May 22, 1952, in Melstone, Montana, to Richard Goodwin and Fern Irene (Baker) Goodwin. He was raised in Melstone, where he developed a lifelong love for the rural way of life.

In 1973, Tom married Barbara (Trotter) Finley. Together, they welcomed four daughters: Monica, Michelle, Melony, and Misty. The couple later divorced. In 1990, Tom married Vickie (Bohlman) Goodwin, welcoming four more daughters into his life: Amber, Tanya, Terri, and Darcy. Together, they became a family of eight daughters.

Tom had a lifelong love of ranching and working with livestock. From 1992 to 2002, he owned Runnin' Dunn Ranch in Flatwillow, Montana. Over the years, he raised cattle, sheep, and pigs at his ranches in Flatwillow and Lavina. He and Vickie also raised cutting horses at Runnin' Dunn Horse Ranch in Lavina. His love of agriculture took them as far as Belize, where they lived and managed a ranch for a time. In his younger years, he rode saddle broncs, reflecting his adventurous spirit and love of horses. He especially loved the ranching way of life.

Tom also worked in the oil fields. In the 1980s, he was severely burned when an oil treater exploded. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, he made a full recovery, carrying only the scars from the accident.

Tom also had a passion for classic cars. Over the years, he restored numerous old vehicles, finding enjoyment in bringing them back to life.

Tom shared many special moments with his daughters throughout their lives. Michelle fondly remembers sitting on his lap, steering the blue Ford and accompanying him to feed the animals. While working on the Hougen Ranch, he taught Melony how to ride a dirt bike. Misty remembers trips to the drugstore, where Dad would treat her to a soda and candy. Darcy remembers sharing fudge bars and Pepsi with him, laughing together, and their adventurous snowmobile rides. Monica remembers fishing, hunting, and off-roading in the Bronco, but most treasured their quiet conversations on her front porch during his final summer, reminiscing and sharing stories.

Terri remembers how Tom loved embarrassing her as a teenager, especially when he'd deliberately show off his tighty-whities at the mall. She also recalls the time he and Vickie hauled squealing pigs through Billings in the trunk of their car, much to Tom's amusement and Terri's embarrassment. Tom also had a favorite saying whenever the dogs barked for no apparent reason: "I guess a chicken must've farted in Melstone!" His granddaughter, Siena, loved it so much that she still repeats it whenever she hears dogs barking.

During the final months of his life, Tom lived with his daughter, Michelle, and her family in Lance Creek, Wyoming. Michelle especially treasured the time they had together during those months. Tom found great joy in spending time with his grandson, Dexter, searching for fossils and interesting rocks. He also enjoyed feeding cows with his son-in-law, Cody, and halter-breaking a colt out of one of his own mares, of which he was especially proud. In his later years, Tom made a point of telling his grandchildren how much he loved them, something his family will always treasure.

Tom is survived by his wife, Vickie (Bohlman) Goodwin of Lavina, Montana; his daughters, Monica Wilcox (Cory) of Lusk, Wyoming; Michelle Kremers (Cody) of Lance Creek, Wyoming; Melony Goodwin-Baumgartner (Josh) of Grove City, Minnesota; Misty Goodwin of Lusk, Wyoming; Amber Moseman (Ron) of Buffalo, Wyoming; Tanya Gairrett (Zack) of Billings, Montana; Terri Mason (Matt) of West Jordan, Utah; and Darcy Irby of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Fern Goodwin; his siblings, Bruce Goodwin, Oscar "Dean" Goodwin, Edith Paslay, and Robert Goodwin; his niece, Tami Brown; and his grandson, Hunter Cole.

Tom believed in Jesus Christ as his Savior, and his family finds comfort in knowing that this goodbye is not forever. Because of the hope we have in Christ, we look forward to the day we will be reunited with him in heaven.

As the last surviving member of his family of origin, Tom will be laid to rest alongside his parents and siblings at Melstone Cemetery in Melstone, Montana.

A private graveside service for family will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Melstone Cemetery in Melstone, Montana, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Melstone Community Center.
