Obituary – Roger Val Meier, 80

Memorial Service for Roger V. Meier will be Friday, December 16, 2022 at the First Congregational Church in Torrington, Wyoming at 3:00pm. The Church is located at 2102 East E Street, Torrington, WY, 82240.  Memorials may be given in remembrance of Roger to the First Congregational Church. Roger was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 14, 1942, to Ezra and Esther (Schernekau) Meier.  Due to the creativity of his parents and sense of appreciation for the “Love” holiday on which Roger was born, his middle name was “Val”;  short for Valentines. At an early age Roger’s family moved to Archbold, Ohio where he grew up around the Meier family and had many uncles, aunts, and cousins who were very good to Roger.  He attended and graduated from Archbold schools in 1960 where he loved sports, lunch time, and did ok in class.  After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served 3 years as a communication technician with his service extending to Germany.  He was honorably discharged in 1963. After returning home he met and married Carol M. Randall on February 19, 1965, in Toledo, Ohio.  The couple has shared a remarkable 57 years of marriage.  Carol had a large family and Roger gained many in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews and was lovingly known as “Uncle Rog”.  The family loved get-togethers and games of all kinds with lots of food to pass around.  Roger and Carol purchased a home early in the marriage in Toledo and lived in the same home for 50 years before moving to Torrington. Two daughters were born to Roger and Carol.  Beth and Patty were the joy of their fathers’ eyes and he had a very difficult time ever saying “no” to either one of them.  Roger loved his girls and gave them a great life. With sporting events, camping, and boating trips, along with family reunions the girls have many wonderful memories of their time growing up. Beth and Patty had families of their own and gave Roger and Carol 5 grandchildren and to date 11 great grandchildren.  “Great Grandpa” loved all his grandchildren and attended many of their activities growing up.

During his life, Roger worked a few different jobs.  He started as a police officer working for the City of Ottawa Hills, Ohio where he learned to locate and protect the best donut shops around.  After several years, he became an over the road truck driver hauling dry cement and made sure he was home every night to be with his family and attend activities.  The last 12 years before retiring he was self-employed by operating small stump grinders for many people around the Toledo area. After retiring with Carol, he enjoyed going out with many friends in their church care group from Westgate Chapel in Toledo and the mall walkers group sharing his life drinking coffee and telling the same stories over and over again. 

Roger enjoyed playing sports throughout his life and boasted about playing football in the Army.  He was on bowling, softball, archery and shooting leagues. He rode motorcycle, went boating, and water skiing. Almost all of these activities were with family members that he loved more than the activity; Roger loved his family!!!  He could sit and talk with anyone and never knew a stranger. 

The end of Roger’s life was spent at the Niobrara County Extended Care Center in Lusk, Wyoming.  Roger’s family is very grateful for the medical and life care given to him this last year.  The physicians, medical staff, hospital staff and care givers were so wonderful, and we greatly appreciate all you did for Roger. The last and most important detail to add to Roger’s life story is that he knew Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and savior.  There were lots of family discussions about the Bible, but never a doubt that Roger would be in Heaven because of Jesus.  He was a faithful church member at Westgate Chapel in Toledo and at the First Congregational Church in Torrington. Special thanks to all his church families for your friendship and love throughout the years both in Toledo and Torrington.  He donated money and time to church as part of the choir, cantatas, committees, and educational classes. Today the final words of Psalm 23 ring loud and true, “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”  Roger, we will see you when we get to Heaven. Until then, please don’t get kicked out!!!!

Roger is survived by his wife Carol, daughters, Beth and Matthew Gordon of Lingle, Wyoming and Patty and Greg Carson of Adrian, Michigan.  5 grandchildren, Jacob and Kristen Gordon of Lusk, WY, Katie and Bo Krein of Lusk, WY, Garret and Maggie Gordon of Naples, FL, Aubrey Slovak of Maybee, MI and Brenna and Connor Butts of Adrian, MI. 11 great grandchildren, Wyatt, Paige, Eli, Emma, Addie, Kinsley, Grayson, Everly, Avery, James, with number 11, a little boy to be born in the near future.  Many wonderful family members on both the Meier and Randall sides of the families.  Thank you to so many dear friends from many different parts of the country for your love over the years and for putting up with Roger’s crazy times and stories. God’s blessings and love to you all.
