Rose Lewis Obituary

Rose Lewis, 101, passed away Fri., February 3, 2017, at the Niobrara Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Fri., Feb. 10, 2017 at Pier Funeral Home, with burial beside her husband at 2:30 P.M. in the Harrison Cemetery, Harrison, NE. Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rose was born March 27, 1915 in the family home. She was the fifth child of eight born to Fred and Catherine (Beck) Hebner of Harrison, NE. Her early education was at the Hebner rural school, Harrison Grade School, with graduation from Sioux County High School receiving her teaching certificate. She taught school for several years.

At the age of 12, Rose lost her mother after an extended illness. The Town of Harrison took the family under their wings, proving the old adage "It takes a town to raise a child".

In June 1935 Rose married Lester Lewis. Unto this union three children were born: Jerry, Melvin, and Linda. They worked at various ranches before purchasing the Van Tassell Stove and Station in 1953, residing there until later in life. Van Tassell was her home and she loved it there and served as a council member for many years.

Rose loved to travel and was always ready to go. To the chagrin of her family, who encouraged her to slow down driving that car, it never worked.

As an active 4-H Leader for 63 years, Rose enjoyed youth activities throughout the county.

Faith was an important part of her life, and the Bible was her guide. She was baptized as a child and was a lifetime member of the United Memorial Methodist Church and the Node Sunday School. She reaffirmed her baptism by being immersed when she was older.

An avid "contester", she entered and won various prizes both locally at the county fair, and nationally with her cooking and sweepstakes. Finally, she won the Grand Prize in the presence of the Lord.

Never missing an election day, she took seriously voting till her 100th birthday.

She was an unfailing hostess with a warm welcome and plenty of good food to anyone that dropped by, always remembering their favorite dish.

Rose is survived by sons, Jerry (Mildred) of Lusk, Melvin of Englewood, Colo. daughter Linda (Dick) Freese of Elgin, Oregon. Grandchildren, Patricia (Stan) Horton of Riverton, Wayne (Laurie) Lewis of Kansas City, MO., Jeff and Chris (Brandi) Canfield, of LaGrande, Oregon, and Rory Canfield, from Wyoming; step-grandchildren, Jenny Peters, Carissa Hewitt, Adam Ross and Paige Killam; eleven great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester in 1988, brothers Bill, Dave, Dan, and Benny Hebner; sisters Margaret Lewis, Katherine Knight and Louise Snook.

A memorial has been established to the Rose Lewis Memorial or donor's choice.
